Line a large baking sheet or a 9x13 pan with parchment paper and set aside. If using foil instead, grease it well with butter to prevent sticking.

Melt the butter in a large pot over medium heat. Add 8 cups miniature marshmallows and stir continuously until completely melted.

Remove from heat and immediately add rice cereal, stirring until evenly coated. Fold in the additional 2 cups of whole marshmallows and 1½ cups shredded coconut until just combined.

Transfer the sticky cereal mixture onto the lined pan. Using a lightly buttered spatula, gently spread the mixture evenly across the pan, being careful not to press too firmly to maintain a soft texture.

Sprinkle the remaining ¼ cup coconut over the top. Let cool for a few minutes before slicing into squares.
